John Oliver is sharing his take on Elizabeth Holmes and her partner, Billy Evans, after A24’s buzzy documentary about the disgraced Theranos founder.
You Can See Everything has been a huge topic of conversation since its release last month, and the staff of Last Week Tonight is apparently not immune to the trend.
“I spent three hours gasping aloud at two complete lunatics who’ve never blinked once in their lives,” the 49-year-old former late night host said on Sunday’s episode.
“If you want to talk about that movie, please contact anyone who works here,” Oliver said on the show, adding, “it’s derailed our workflow to an unacceptable degree.”
Oliver broaching the subject of the documentary came as a punchline as he made fun of a Republican Senate candidate’s evasive interview answer, saying that he had not “seen someone dodge a question that shamelessly” since Evans and Holmes in the movie.
Comic Nathan Fielder and director Lance Oppenheim’s documentary You Can See Everything follows Holmes and her family in the month before she began her prison sentence in 2023. Holmes, 42, was convicted of fraud in 2022 after claiming that her startup, Theranos, had developed a revolutionary medical device that was able to diagnose a range of conditions with a few drops of blood.
After she was found to have duped investors with technology that never worked, Holmes was sentenced to 11 years in prison and started serving her time at a Texas facility in May 2023.
Shot in secret over three years, You Can See Everything debuted as a surprise at the Telluride Film Festival in September.
The documentary broke box office records upon its October 19 release, earning a staggering $15 million opening weekend box office debut across North America — which was more than double its $7 million projection. The achievement made it the second-highest grossing debut for a non-musical documentary in more than 20 years.
Critics have hailed the film as a “masterpiece,” with the movie even landing a rare perfect Rotten Tomatoes score after its first reviews.
The hit documentary has also been praised by Fielder’s fellow comedians, with Borat creator Sacha Baron Cohen recently raving that the project reshaped the satirical mockumentary genre that Baron Cohen coined.
“He’s really reinvented the genre, and he had a rule which was not to do anything that I had done,” Baron Cohen told Vanity Fair of Fielder. “He’d say ‘we’re going to do the stuff that Sacha would never do.’”
