Joburg motorists still without camera-based speed enforcement - EWN

Nearly ten months after the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD)’s speed cameras were switched off, Johannesburg motorists are still without camera-based speed enforcement.

The city’s three-year contract with Syntell, which provided the cameras and the system used to process fines, lapsed on 23 December.

This is costing the city millions of rand in revenue. In the previous financial year, more than three million of the JMPD’s traffic fines were from speed cameras.

In 2023/24, the JMPD generated almost R47 million from all traffic fines.

When the contract lapsed, Syntell took its cameras with it, and the JMPD doesn’t seem to have any of its own.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said the tender process to replace the system is still underway.
