JD Vance signals shift on Iran war, distancing himself from Trump after Republican losses - The News International
US Vice President JD Vance has publicly distanced himself from President Donald Trump's defence of the Iran war following major Republican losses in the midterm elections.
According to the Associated Press, Vance blamed the unpopular conflict, rising living costs and concerns over US foreign policy for the party's defeat.
βThe real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone,β Vance wrote on X.
He questioned whether the war justified Republicans losing control of the Senate for six years.
βIf youβd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so,β he wrote.
Trump, however, continued defending the military operation, saying: βThe Iran thing, we had to do and we continue to do it.β
Democrats accused Vance of distancing himself from decisions he previously supported.
βWhy didnβt he resign? And most importantly, why didnβt he stand up for Americans?β Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Rosemary Boeglin said.
Vance also suggested changes to immigration enforcement, including greater scrutiny of businesses employing undocumented workers.
The disagreement comes as Vance considers a possible presidential run in 2028, with Democrats now controlling both chambers of Congress.
