Japanese surgeon thrills pediatric patients with magic

An orthopedic surgeon, who also doubles as a magician, entertained children in the pediatric ward in a hospital in Kochi Prefecture, western Japan.

Masuda Yukiharu, or "Dr.HARU," runs a clinic in Okayama Prefecture. He performed at a magic show held by Kochi Medical School Hospital in Nankoku City for children who are hospitalized there. Among the attendees were children ranging from under 1 year old to junior high school students, as well as their families.

As the children watched attentively, Masuda performed self-taught magic tricks, using a handkerchief and metal rings.

He then visited children who cannot leave their rooms due to the risk of infection. After performing for them, he encouraged them by saying, "Get well soon."

A 10-year-old boy who has been hospitalized for about six months said it was amazing because he had no idea how the tricks worked. He added it lifted his spirits.

The boy's father said his son felt a level of excitement he typically does not experience in everyday life. The father added that after being refreshed from the show, his son will be able to focus on his treatment.

Masuda said he was glad that he was able to see the children smile and that it was worthwhile if his performance energized the patients.
