Jaishankar says India-Canada ties set to reach a higher level after UNGA talks

India and Canada are preparing to take their relationship "to a higher level", External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said after meeting his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting came as Canada also highlighted at the UN General Assembly its efforts to build renewed partnerships with large economies such as India and China, and referred to new initiatives with New Delhi to strengthen multilateralism.

Jaishankar said he held a "productive discussion" with Anand during their interaction at the UNGA. He said India and Canada were working to take bilateral ties forward.

Separately, Canada underlined at the UN General Assembly that it was seeking to build renewed partnerships with major economies, including India and China. It also pointed to new initiatives with India aimed at strengthening multilateralism.

The developments at the UN General Assembly signalled a renewed push by both sides, with Jaishankar saying India and Canada were preparing to take ties to "a higher level" and Canada stressing partnership-building and multilateral cooperation with New Delhi.
