IUML uneasy over Keralam Minister K.M. Shaji’s luxury-car controversy

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) appears uneasy over the controversy surrounding Keralam Local Self-Government Minister K.M. Shaji’s use of a luxury car offered by a friend.
IUML Malappuram district secretary P. Abdul Hameed described the incident as a “spelling mistake” rather than a serious lapse. “Four of the party’s Ministers are new faces. But all of them are efficient like our veteran Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty. Such ‘spelling mistakes’ may happen in the initial days to anyone. It is nothing serious. We have to look at it in that sense,” he said.
The party has, however, reportedly asked Mr. Shaji not to make further comments that could prolong the controversy. Mr. Shaji is known for his sharp responses, which have at times been critical of his opponents.
At a press briefing held to explain his position, the Minister criticised a news channel owner and accused the media of lacking moral and ethical standards. The remarks drew further attention to the issue.
Speaking at a function at A.R. Nagar near Vengara, Mr. Shaji said he had not violated any law and was duty-bound to tell the public about it.
“I have not violated any law in this country. Nor will I do so. Even if I have not told anyone else, I have an obligation to tell the people,” he said. He also said he was speaking at the event as an elected representative who had won with the people’s votes, rather than as a Minister.
The IUML had reportedly expressed concern over his use of the luxury vehicle. Party leaders had also questioned the use of luxury cars as official vehicles, especially since Mr. Shaji had criticised similar practices while in the Opposition.
Mr. Shaji had used his friend’s car with an official board, the number 13 and an official emblem. He later returned the vehicle to the friend after the controversy broke out. His explanation the other day about vehicles used by Ministers left netizens in splits, giving rise to memes and laughter.
