MİLLİYET.COM.TR / A report published on Ynet, anIsraeli news outlet, revealed a striking detail regarding Tel Aviv’s naval power in the region.
While using strong language to describe the Israeli Navy’s “secret weapon,” Ynet placed special emphasis on Türkiye’s rising naval power.
While the phrase “3,000-metric-ton warning” in the headline drew attention, it became clear that the main message was directed at Türkiye between the lines.
Ynet reported that Israel’s new submarine, the INS Drakon, weighs approximately 3,000 metric tons and that the platform, which is about 70 meters long, will be equipped with advanced weapons and intelligence systems.
Ynet wrote that Türkiye possesses a powerful naval fleet developed largely independently.
The report highlighted that Ankara views its maritime domain as a strategic asset, noting that the development of Türkiye’s naval power has not gone unnoticed by the Israel Defense Forces.
This assessment revealed that the news of Israel unveiling its new submarine was not merely a weapons system unveiling; the report stated, “As the balance of naval power in the Eastern Mediterranean and the surrounding region shifts, Tel Aviv is also closely monitoring Türkiye’s growing capabilities through its domestic defense industry.”
The report highlighted that Türkiye’s naval power has grown in recent years not only through an increase in the number of existing platforms but also through the development of domestic design and production capabilities, noting that “while REIS-class submarines are being built in Türkiye, the I-class frigates developed under the MİLGEM program are also being produced in Turkish shipyards. Furthermore, Türkiye is continuing the MİLDEN project aimed at developing its own national submarine,” the report stated.
Israeli officials claimed that the new platform can remain on mission for longer periods and carry more weapons compared to previous submarines, adding, “The submarine will be equipped with advanced intelligence systems and capable of carrying out covert missions in remote regions.”
While the Israeli press listed these capabilities among the new submarine’s key features, the announcement of this capacity drew attention at a time when Türkiye is also rapidly developing its naval power.
Israeli officials noted that they intend to prioritize naval assets with longer ranges and high stealth capabilities in the coming period, they assessed that “Türkiye’s expansion of its capabilities through domestically produced warships, submarines, and various naval platforms is creating a new landscape in the Eastern Mediterranean’s naval power equation.”
According to reports, the INS Drakon’s arrival in Israel came after approximately 14 years of preparation. The submarine made a 24-day voyage from Kiel, Germany, to Haifa.
Ynet reported that the submarine’s cost was approximately 500 million euros. Once the integration of Israeli-made weapons and intelligence systems is complete, the submarine is expected to become fully operational within about two months.
