Inside Israel's war on Hamas - National Post

Article contentWe’re approaching the third anniversary of the shocking Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel, and the very consequential war that followed soon after. A fascinating new book offers a never-before seen look inside the Israeli response to the attacks and the crucial decisions about how and when to respond.

In this interview, Rob Breakenridge speaks with Canadian Elliot Kaufman, who’s a member of the Wall Street Journal’s editorial board and is co-author of the new book, “In the War Room: The Inside Story of Israel’s Fight Against Hamas and the Iranian Axis.” Drawing on multiple interviews with top Israeli and American officials, “In the War Room” reveals the intense debates that shaped the war’s early days — including whether Israel should tackle the Hezbollah threat in Lebanon before launching an invasion of Gaza.

The book also paints an interesting picture of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose surprisingly cautious approach stands in stark contrast to the public perception of a leader eager to take the fight to Israel’s enemies. We’ll also look at how U.S. policy helped to shape Israel’s approach and how that policy evolved from the Biden administration to the Trump administration.

Plus, the big question: did Israel win this war? What the military victories and diplomatic setbacks for Israel tell us about where things go from here.
