Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis on Friday unveiled plans for a new bridge, tunnel, and mixed-use precinct in the CBD, which could finally see the city’s unfinished foreshore freeways completed after more than 50 years.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis on Friday unveiled plans for a new bridge, tunnel, and mixed-use precinct in the CBD, which could finally see the city’s unfinished foreshore freeways completed after more than 50 years.

The proposal would see a new bridge linking the inbound freeway directly to Helen Suzman Boulevard, while the existing outbound elevated freeway would eventually be replaced by an underground tunnel.

Hill-Lewis announced the Foreshore precinct project on one of the city's unfinished bridges, saying the project would ease congestion, create new public spaces, and unlock 15 hectares of land for housing, businesses, and recreation.

The mayor said the city's unfinished bridges had created a barrier between the CBD and Cape Town's harbour.

"Today we are setting out a way to change that. A proposal to reconnect Cape Town with its harbour, to create a far better movement of traffic into the city and to unlock 15 hectares of precious inner-city land that has been lying dormant for more than fifty years," he said.

Hill-Lewis said while the cost of the project was yet to be determined, a public participation process was set to begin in the coming months, with construction on the first phase earmarked for the next council term.
