Herald on the hunt for the next generation of passionate journalists

The Sydney Morning Herald is seeking talented, curious reporters for a 12-month traineeship program. This is an opportunity to learn the craft of journalism alongside award-winning reporters and editors at the country’s oldest continually published newspaper.

The Herald is known for its courageous, independent and quality journalism. While the paper has been in print for more than 195 years, it is also on the forefront of innovation in online storytelling as digital news evolves.

Applications will be open until just before midnight on Sunday, October 18, and the traineeships will begin in February next year.

The Herald’s editor, Jordan Baker, said the masthead had a proud history of training journalists who go on to become some of the country’s most significant voices.

“International editor Peter Hartcher was a Herald cadet, as was economics editor Ross Gittins and columnist Jacqueline Maley,” said Baker.

“Our more recent graduates include Natassia Chrysanthos, who will become our South-East Asia correspondent next year, and Anthony Segaert, who is our Parramatta bureau chief. I look forward to celebrating the successes of the class of 2027 in the years ahead.”

Luke McIlveen, executive editor of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, said: “Many of the biggest names in Australian journalism have come through our trainee program. It is highly competitive and we’re all excited to welcome the best and brightest aspiring young journalists into our newsrooms in 2027.”
