Heavy rain closes Chaparai, Kothapalli waterfalls in ASR district; roads damaged in G.K. Veedhi

Torrential rain lashed Alluri Sitharama Raju district on Wednesday (September 23, 2026), leading to the overflowing of streams and waterfalls and disrupting road connectivity in several areas.

Water levels rose in streams, and several popular tourist destinations, including Chaparai and Kothapalli waterfalls, were closed to visitors as a precautionary measure. Authorities have advised tourists and the public against venturing into streams, waterfalls and other vulnerable locations.

G.K. Veedhi recorded nearly 50 mm of rainfall, and Hukumpeta, Paderu and Pedabayalu received more than 30 mm each. Munchingputtu recorded around 39 mm, officials said.

The heavy rain also affected road connectivity in parts of G.K. Veedhi mandal. Several stretches of roads in the Jerrela area were also damaged or washed away after the rainfall, affecting movement in the interior pockets.

In view of the continuing rainfall and the possibility of further heavy rain, Joint Collector T. Sripooja directed officials to remain on high alert and closely monitor the situation across the Agency mandals.

She instructed authorities to identify vulnerable locations in advance, particularly areas where streams, rivulets and seasonal waterways are likely to overflow, and put in place special monitoring arrangements.

The Joint Collector also directed officials to establish dedicated control rooms in every mandal and ensure that information on local conditions, rainfall, water levels in streams, road connectivity, public transport, electricity supply and other essential services is regularly communicated to the District Control Room.
