Group secures N22.6m scholarship support for underprivileged children - Punch Newspapers

The Gamesville Foundation has secured N22.6m in scholarship support from a corporate sponsor for 36 underprivileged children across seven charitable organisations in Nigeria. According to a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Monday by Co-founder and Trustee, Chidinma Sedenu, the scholarships were presented at a ceremony held at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. “The Gamesville Foundation has raised N22.6m in scholarships from a corporate sponsor to support 36 underprivileged children across seven charitable organisations in Nigeria. “Through the collaboration, The Gamesville Foundation vets beneficiary organisations and children, provides access to communities and beneficiaries in need, and coordinates the scholarship programme with the partner charities and the corporate sponsor. “The seven beneficiary organisations are Street Child Care and Welfare Initiative (SCCWI), Echoes of Mercy and Hope Foundation (EMHF), JAKIN NGO, Society for the Empowerment of Young Persons (SEYP), Diocesan Special Education Center (DSEC), Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative (IWEI), and Candlelight Foundation,” the statement partly read.See more Punch stories on Google.Add Punch on Google She recalled that even during lean years, when the company was compelled to make difficult decisions, including salary reductions, it continued to support the scholarship programme because of the importance of the work. The statement noted that while speaking further at the ceremony, Sedenu shared the story of a former scholarship beneficiary of Street Child Care and Welfare Initiative. “The young beneficiary had been trafficked from the Benin Republic to Nigeria as a child to work as a housemaid and was later abandoned. He spent more than a year sleeping under the Oshodi bridge before organisations working with vulnerable children intervened. He eventually became a beneficiary of SCCWI, receiving care, stability and access to education. “At the inaugural scholarship ceremony, he shared his story with the corporate sponsor. The sponsor subsequently offered him an opportunity to join the company upon graduation and continued to follow his progress throughout his university education. This year, he graduated, joined the company and began working at one of its locations,” the statement quoted Sedenu as saying. She added, “Representatives of the seven beneficiary organisations attended the ceremony and introduced their scholarship beneficiaries.
