Gladiators trailer: Ajith Kumar's racing obsession gets a full-throttle showcase

Ajith Kumar has spent decades making fans whistle in theatres. But when he is not playing a larger-than-life hero on screen, there is another place where he seems just as comfortable – behind the wheel. The trailer of Gladiators: In Pursuit of Challenges, out on Saturday, puts Ajith the racer firmly in the spotlight and takes us inside his long-standing love affair with motorsport.

And this is not Ajith casually taking a car for a spin. The four-minute trailer dives into his life as a professional racer, complete with roaring engines, demanding circuits and the kind of pressure that comes with racing at speed.

Ajith has never exactly hidden his love for motorsport. But Gladiators gives fans a much closer look at what keeps pulling him back to the track. He speaks about racing with the kind of affection usually reserved for a lifelong passion, calling it “a beautiful sport” that he loves.

The trailer also makes one thing clear: there is plenty more to professional racing than simply putting your foot down.

Endurance racing, in particular, demands stamina, focus and serious mental strength. The documentary gets into that side of the sport, following the discipline and preparation required to keep going when the excitement of the race wears off.

Ajith is seen tackling challenging tracks while members of his racing team open up about his journey. Motorsport names also feature in the documentary, including Narain Karthikeyan, India’s first Formula One driver, who offers his perspective on the world Ajith has chosen to pursue alongside his film career.

There is also a refreshing lack of the usual superstar treatment. Gladiators is less interested in Ajith the actor and more curious about Ajith the man who willingly gets into a racing car and puts himself through the physical and mental demands of the sport.

The trailer touches upon his attitude towards success and failure too. For Ajith, the thrill appears to be in the pursuit itself – pushing his limits, taking on the next challenge and seeing what happens when he gets behind the wheel.

But just when you think Gladiators is going to be all engines and adrenaline, the trailer changes gears.

Ajith’s wife, former actor Shalini, makes a rare screen appearance, nearly two decades after she stepped away from acting. Their children, Anoushka and Aadvik, also feature. Shalini talks about Ajith’s determination and his approach to failure, while their children offer a glimpse of their father away from the racetrack and the film set.

Composer GV Prakash Kumar has also announced that the documentary’s original soundtrack, Born to RACE, will be released soon. He called it a special experience for Ajith’s fans and thanked them for their response to the music featured in the trailer.
