Formula 1 agrees to shorter races in 2027 World Championship

Formula 1 drivers will need to become accustomed to shorter races from next season.

Formula 1 races will be reduced from 305 to 290 kilometres in 2027.

The Formula 1 Commission has abolished the strict three-hour overall event cap.

This gives organisers flexibility to complete full race distances.

Formula 1 has approved a 15 kilometre reduction in official race distances starting next season.

The change means the total distance will be cut from 305 to 290 kilometres.

The Formula 1 Commission finalised the decision in London.

"In line with the refinements to the power unit regulations to be introduced in 2027 on fuel flow, a reduction in the total race distance from 305km to 290km was approved, corresponding to a reduction of two or three laps," a statement read.

The power unit regulations favour increased engine power over hybrid electrical output.

To better handle rain delays and red flags, the commission has also abolished the strict three-hour overall event cap.

While the two-hour maximum of active racing time remains, the change gives organisers flexibility to complete full race distances.

Another objective ‌is to give spectators the best possible chance ‌to enjoy a full race when disruptions occur.

Practice sessions will also gain added flexibility to extend following stoppages.
