Former V-P Hamid Ansari’s remarks exposed ‘Muslim League-Maoist character’ of Congress, says BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday (September 21, 2026) claimed that former Vice-President Hamid Ansari “exposed” the “Muslim League-Maoist character” of the Congress party through his remarks about former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s views on “Hindu right-wing communalism”.

At an event commemorating late constitutional expert A.G. Noorani on Saturday (September 19), Mr. Ansari had referred to the former Prime Minister’s view saying that “the real danger to India was not communism, but Hindu right-wing communalism’, citing Noorani’s book The RSS: A Menace to India.

Addressing a press conference, BJP MP and national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the former Vice-President quoted the book, according to which Mr. Nehru said that for him communism was not as great a threat as Hindu nationalism.

“For this, I would like to congratulate Hamid Ansari ji that he has done three extremely important things. Number one, he has thoroughly exposed that the Congress has now completely become a Maoist Muslim League Congress. Secondly, he deserves congratulations for quoting that, according to Nehru ji considered communism a threat. For the third point,..who brought up the reference to Nehru?” he said.

“We want to remind you that [Congress leader] Rahul Gandhi, while addressing the Press Club in Washington D.C., on June 2, 2023, said: ‘Muslim League is absolutely secular’...The Muslim League that was established by Jinnah is the same party with which you are running the government in Kerala today. It is a black chapter in the history of independent India that five Ministers in the Kerala government are from the Muslim League,” he said.

“If anyone claims that this Muslim League — meaning the Indian Union Muslim League formed in March 1949 — is not Jinnah’s Muslim League, they are telling an outright lie. This is because its founder, Mohammed Ismail, was the president of the Madras Presidency unit of Jinnah’s Muslim League,” said the BJP leader.
