Former PP Busisiwe Mkhwebane's legal woes far from over
Despite the clearing of perjury charges against her, former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane still has another legal hurdle.
On Wednesday, the Pretoria Magistrates Court granted her discharge application.
The charges emanate from a Constitutional Court judgement on her Absa/Bancorp report based on the mandate of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB). In the Constitutional Court judgement, Mkhwebane was found to have given differing versions about her meeting with then statesman Jacob Zuma during her investigation into the SARB Her perjury matter went to trial in the Pretoria Magistrates Court, where she brought a discharge application after the State closed its case. The court granted her the application, acquitting her of the charges. However, her woes are far from over. Mkhwebane is still fighting the bid to strike her from the roll of advocates and she's heading to the Supreme Court of Appeals (SCA) to continue the fight for her R10 million end-of-service gratuity. Meanwhile, the Busisiwe Mkhwebane Foundation has welcomed her acquittal, calling it one of the most consequential controversies of her tenure.
