Film Academy of the Philippines supports '58TH' as PH Oscars contender - GMA Network

Groundbreaking animated documentary 58th continues to share its empowering story as it prepares to represent the Philippines on a bigger stage.

Recently, the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) expressed its support for the award-winning film in its bid for consideration in the Best Documentary Feature category at the 99th Academy Awards. READ: GMA Pictures' '58th' among eight Philippine films in running for 99th Academy Awards

The organization also seeks consideration for the short film Agapito in the Best Live Action Short Film category. Filipiñana will represent the Philippines as its official entry in the Best International Feature Film category.

"The Oscars should see more of Philippine cinema, and Pinoy Oscars Pursuit is our effort to make that happen. We are proud to support 58th and Agapito as they bring their stories, their craft, and their distinct Filipino voices to the Academy,” FAP director general, Paolo Villaluna, said in a statement.

Produced by GMA Pictures and GMA Public Affairs, 58th follows the story of Reynafe Castillo (Glaiza De Castro), who continues her years-long fight for answers and honor for her father as the 58th victim of the Maguindanao massacre. The movie also shows the grief of the victims' families and their pursuit of justice following the tragedy.

For its powerful story and production, 58th was honored at the Manila International Film Festival in Hollywood. It took home several awards, including the Best Picture award in the Documentary category.

Meanwhile, 58th was announced to be screened at the 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) on October 6-15, 2026.
