Fear and anger gripped students of the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences, Jalingo, yesterday after suspected hoodlums allegedly invaded a female hostel outside the institution’s premises, dispossessed students of valuables and raped a student.
Hundreds of students subsequently staged a peaceful protest, demanding urgent measures to improve security around the hostels and protect them from further attacks.
According to sources familiar with the incident, the assailants invaded the hostel in the early hours.
A female student was reportedly raped and injured during the attack. Sources also alleged that the assailants cut off one of her fingers.
The victim was subsequently taken to GSCN Hospital in the Mile 6 area of Jalingo, where received medical attention, according to the sources.
The protesters called for immediate safety measures around the affected hostels and urged security agencies to investigate the attack, identify the perpetrators, and bring them to justice.
The students also appealed to the college management and relevant authorities to take preventive measures to ensure that such an incident does not recur.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Taraba State Police Command or the management of the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences on the alleged incident.
