Dexter Lawrence happy with Bengals’ 'statement' defensive showing - Bengals Wire

The Cincinnati Bengals’ defense bent a bit on Sunday, but it refused to break.

Houston finished with 374 total yards, although the Texans couldn't reach the end zone in a 20-6 loss that moved Cincinnati to 2-0.

Afterward, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence called the performance another sign of the team’s progress.

“Holding them to no touchdowns? That’s a pretty good statement,” Lawrence told FOX19’s Jeremy Rauch. “And winning the game, that’s another great statement.

“I think for us, we just got to keep building on this momentum and understand how we’re doing it and understand why we’re doing it. And just keep playing for each other.”

Lawrence delivered one of Cincinnati’s defining plays. Facing fourth-and-1 from the Bengals’ 18-yard line during the second quarter, Houston gave the ball to David Montgomery only for Lawrence to penetrate the backfield and stop him for a 1-yard loss.

The Texans finished 0-for-4 in the red zone. Cincinnati also ended Houston’s final possession with Cedric Johnson’s fourth-down sack.

The Bengals forced four fumbles and posted four sacks in their Week 1 win over Tampa Bay, then kept Houston out of the end zone.

So, it's no secret why Lawrence believes Cincinnati is building a sustainable defensive identity.
