The Chamarajanagar district administration has imposed temporary restrictions on ‘padayatra’ carried out by a large number of devotees and members of the public through the forest areas of Male Mahadeshwara Hill on the occasion of Deepavali. Such a measure has been taken as a precaution for the safety of pilgrims visiting the hill in the wake of increasing human-wildlife conflict.
Deputy Commissioner Shreeroopa has issued order restricting the movement of devotees and others from within the State and outside the State to the hill temple as part of annual Deepavali Jatre to prevent attacks from wild animals and any untoward incidents during their foot pilgrimage through the forest.
The restrictions will remain in force from November 6 to 11, between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m, the order said.
The order was issued following a request from forest officials to restrict foot pilgrimages from Tala Betta to MM Hill, primarily to prevent animal attacks. More than five to six lakh devotees, including those from neighbouring States, are expected to visit M.M. Hills to participate in the Deepavali festivities, a press release said.
