Dave Toub discusses a recently elevated practice squad player - Chiefs Wire

Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub spoke with reporters on Thursday. He said he's optimistic that recently elevated practice squad player Ben VanSumeren will make an impact on special teams.

"The good thing about (Ben VanSumeren) him is that he's like a linebacker. He is a linebacker, really. I mean, he has a linebacker history and fullback body. But he's a fast guy," said Toub. "He runs in the 4.4s, and he's a big guy. So, he can really help you on special teams. That's why we elevated him last week, and that's why he is now on the 53. So, he's going to be a four-phase guy for us going forward. I'm excited about that. Andy (Reid) is excited to have a full-back again, too. So, all those things are helpful for our football team."

The Chiefs signed veteran fullback Ben VanSumeren to their practice squad on August 31 after the Buffalo Bills waived him at the conclusion of the 2026 preseason. A native of Bay City, Michigan, VanSumeren rose to prominence in the college ranks with the Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans.

He began his professional football career as an undrafted free agent in 2023 with the Philadelphia Eagles.
