Criminologist Chris Kanyane believes criminals are running amok due to the weaknesses in South Africa's Justice System.

Criminologist Chris Kanyane believes criminals are running amok due to the weaknesses in South Africa's Justice System.

Kanyane's comment follows mass shootings in recent months, with the latest a week ago in Lwandle in Cape Town and in Wedela on Gauteng's West Rand. In Cape Town, 27 people were killed in two separate mass shootings last weekend. While in Gauteng, 17 people were shot and killed at a tavern in Wedela, Carletonville. Kanyane says there's no safe corner in the country.

β€œThe thugs have realised the law is broken and they are running South Africa like it belongs to them. What we’re seeing a deeper public safety crisis in South Africa. Armed violent criminals, illegal firearms, organised criminal networks that have infiltrated the South African Police Service, intimidated communities, weak intelligence and a criminal justice system that too often reacts only after lives have been lost,” Kanyane said.
