A two-day extended district committee meeting of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] will be held in Kozhikode from October 6, 2026.
According to sources, the meeting is expected to follow up on the corrective steps suggested during the extended State committee held here last month. Opposition leader and party Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan will open the meeting at the AKG Auditorium near the CPI(M) district committee office. Central committee members E.P. Jayarajan, Elamaram Kareem, K.K. Shailaja, C.S. Sujatha, P.K. Sreemathi, P. Sathidevi, and T.P. Ramakrishnan will be present.
Around 120 leaders including district committee members, area committee secretaries, and party members who are functionaries of the class and mass organisations will participate. The decisions taken at the extended State committee meeting will be explained before them. The delegates will also have an opportunity to air their views.
The meeting assumes significance against the backdrop of the electoral reverses suffered by the CPI(M) in Kozhikode, considered to be one of its strongholds in the State, in recent times. While the party lost power in the Kozhikode district panchayat and a large number of local bodies, its presence in the Legislative Assembly from the district was reduced to just one member. Of the 13 seats in the district, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) could win from Beypore alone. Party State secretariat member P.A. Mohamed Riyas emerged victorious from there. The setback is considered to be serious as the CPI(M)-led front suffered defeat in seats such as Kozhikode North, Elathur, Balussery, Koyilandy, and Perambra. In Vadakara, United Democratic Front (UDF)-backed Revolutionary Marxist Party candidate K.K. Rema romped home for a second consecutive term. In the 2021 Assembly polls, the LDF had won 11 seats in the district.
Meanwhile, a section of the leaders cite the reduced majority of the UDF candidate in the recent byelection to the Kuttichira ward of the Kozhikode Corporation as an indication of the electorate’s unhappiness with the State government. They believe the party can cash in on this feeling.
The party leadership expects that the message of internal correction adopted at the extended State committee meeting can be taken forward in the coming days to rejuvenate the cadre. The corrective steps suggested are likely to be implemented through similar events proposed in the area and local committees. The focus is likely to be on direct interactions with people from all walks of society to reach out to them. Ahead of the extended State committee meeting in September, family meets were held in all local committees in the district. Party leaders claim that over a lakh people, including party sympathisers, attended them.
