Club Med South Africa: Is the new KZN beach-and-safari resort worth it? - IOL

The ultimate spot to unwind: Club Med South Africa’s infinity pool overlooking the coastal greenbelt and ocean.

Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari had its official global inauguration on September 17, 2026.

The resort welcomed its first guests on July 4, 2026, officially opening its doors in Tinley Manor, on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast.

Before the ceremonial ribbon-cutting by the leadership of Tinley Leisure and Club Med, IOL Leisure got to experience the resort and its offerings.

Guests are encouraged to book a minimum stay of three days to get the full experience of Club Med South Africa, which might leave you wanting more and more.

The Club Med experience doesn't start at the resort but at King Shaka International Airport, with resort staff welcoming guests and tagging luggage for it to be delivered to their rooms.

The drive to Club Med South Africa is approximately 20 to 30 minutes, but with the excitement in the air, it does feel a bit longer.

When IOL Leisure first travelled to the resort a year ago, it was all building structures that were incomplete. Now, the vision is finally complete, and it was pleasant to see everything that was described during the initial site visit.

Upon arrival at the resort, guests are given a proudly South African welcome, with a marimba band and singing in full effect.

Now, this is a lovely touch, especially if you are an international tourist visiting South Africa.

Group check-ins are made a breeze, with a designated staff member welcoming groups and room keys laid out.

Club Med room keys are different from those at other hotels. Instead of the usual cards, the resort uses bracelets that you wear throughout your stay to access your room and other amenities at the hotel.

The Club Med South Africa bracelets are extra special, as they have a touch of Mzansi and are made with colourful beadwork.

The resort is large. It is a 32-hectare oceanfront site, and depending on where your room is, there is a lot of walking involved.

This is a bonus when it comes to meeting those step goals, but there are buggies if walking while on holiday is not your thing.

Club Med culture promotes active wellness, group activities and sustainable practices, such as not having bottled water in rooms. Instead, water coolers can be found on the ground floor of each building block.

The beach resort has four pools, with family and adults-only spaces.

The adults-only pool, also called the Zen Pool, is an infinity pool overlooking KwaZulu-Natal's Dolphin Coast – perfect for those Instagram pictures.

The beachfront resort is designed for the whole family, and the Kids Club is a mini paradise for the little ones.

Little travellers have their own pool area and fun amenities that will have them wanting to stay there the whole day.

Because parents also need me-time, even on vacation, the beach resort's Kids Club allows you to bring the children in for a day of fun activities with supervised, qualified G.Os (Gentils Organisateurs).

The Kids Club is broken up into age groups: Baby Club Med (4–23 months), Petit Club Med (2–3 years) and Mini Club Med (4–10 years), with curated programmes for each age.

Do note that Baby Club Med and Petit Club Med are supplementary services at a cost, subject to availability and pre-booking, while Mini Club Med is included at participating resorts.

There is plenty to do at the resort, with an extensive range of land and water activities.

You can learn to surf at Club Med's first surf school in South Africa, go sailing, try stand-up paddleboarding, take part in yoga or even try the brand's signature flying trapeze.

The all-inclusive offering doesn't just stop at the food, with certain activities included in the package, such as dance and yoga classes.

If you are on the fancier side of life, the iLanga Exclusive Collection is for you, with a spa and private pool area available.

The restaurants showcase South African flavours and regional produce, as well as the signature Club Med style of food found at the other resorts.

Guests can choose between the Oceana and Nguni restaurants.

Oceana is great for family meals, but when you want to be boujee, Nguni is the place to be.

By the end of our second visit to Nguni, the staff already knew our orders by heart.

The staff at the beach resort are the heart of Club Med South Africa.

You can never pass one without being greeted or offered a ride on a buggy. The staff serve during the day and then come alive at night, hosting the amazing evening events at the resort.

The resort’s programme is designed to keep guests active, curated to make your stay extra fun.

From the all-white Garden Party, which ends late at the Dune Beach Bar, to a Welcome to South Africa experience that has a spectacular show and a DJ set, there is plenty happening after sunset.

The latter will have you shaking what your mamma gave you on the dance floor.

At Club Med South Africa, you may arrive alone, but you leave having made new acquaintances and exchanged numbers with people you hope to link up with again.

Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari has added a bit of exclusivity to the KZN coast.

Travellers can enjoy the beach and also experience the safari offering of the province. You can split your stay between Tinley Manor and Vikela Safari Lodge, which is situated within the private Mpilo Game Reserve.

The safari experience is an additional option, which is booked separately at its own cost.

This means guests can enjoy the best of both worlds, moving from the beach to the bush without having to leave KwaZulu-Natal.

Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari is a place that offers a bit of everything and is certain to attract international tourists to the province.

Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari Resort is an exclusive overnight destination and does not offer day passes. Guests are required to book a minimum stay of three nights to enjoy the full all-inclusive resort experience.

Prices are dependent on the season, and prices can range from R39,020 for a three night stay for two adults and one child.

But it is worth noting that this kind of holiday may not necessarily fall within the average South African traveller's budget.

For local travellers wanting to experience the resort, it may be one of those holidays worth saving up for and planning ahead for, especially if you are travelling as a family.

Once you are there, however, the all-inclusive offering means you can enjoy your meals, selected activities and entertainment without constantly having to reach for your wallet.

For me, Club Med South Africa is a different kind of KZN getaway, one that brings together the beach, family fun, wellness, entertainment, luxury and safari in one experience.
