City Power withdraws teams in Kliptown after unsafe working conditions - EWN
City Power has withdrawn its technical teams in Kliptown, Soweto, after protests and intimidation by residents made it unsafe for workers to continue with repairs.
The utility is now warning that electricity restoration will be delayed until its teams can safely return.
Pimville Zone 9 in Soweto is also one of the places that have been affected.
City Power said it has identified a faulty cable termination but has not been able to complete the repairs.
The utility said its technical teams and service provider were mobilised to investigate the outage.
However, protests and intimidation have forced them to withdraw, with City Power saying the workers could have made further progress if they had been able to continue.
“Our teams will be redeployed as soon as safety can be guaranteed. Once they are back on site and have concluded the necessary assessments, we will be able to provide a reliable restoration estimate,” said City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
Mangena added that the withdrawal is a precautionary measure and not a refusal to restore power.
