Christa Pike survived a lethal-injection attempt in Tennessee, with officials confirming she was transported for medical treatment.

Christa Pike remained alive after Tennessee officials administered two doses of the lethal-injection drug pentobarbital during an attempted execution on September 30, 2026. The 50-year-old death row inmate was taken from the prison to an off-site medical facility, but her current medical condition has not been publicly disclosed.

(X/@FilmWithCherry)The Tennessee Department of Correction said it had followed every step of the state's established execution protocol. The department said the protocol does not permit additional procedures beyond those carried out that night and confirmed that Pike was transported to an off-site medical facility.

Pike's attorneys, meanwhile, said she remained alive after both doses were administered. Witnesses reported hearing her snoring and making other sounds during the execution, according to reports. Her lawyers subsequently sought emergency court intervention and said she was taken for medical treatment.

Pike was taken by ambulance from Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville to an off-site medical facility after the execution attempt.

However, there is no public official update on her medical condition as of October 1. Tennessee corrections officials have confirmed her transfer but have not identified the facility or released details about her treatment. Reuters also reported that her condition was not immediately known after she was taken for medical care.

Pike's lawyers said they had not been informed of her condition. Reports from witnesses described her as still alive after the second dose, but those observations do not establish the medical cause of the failed execution or Pike's current health status.

Pike's execution was delayed earlier Wednesday after a federal appeals court temporarily blocked it while considering legal claims raised by her attorneys. The US Supreme Court later cleared the way for Tennessee to proceed.

The execution eventually began at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution. According to the Associated Press, witnesses saw Pike strapped to a gurney before the procedure. After the first dose, she remained alive. A second dose was subsequently administered, but witnesses continued to hear sounds from the execution chamber.

The state's written protocol provides for a second set of syringes if an inmate is not deceased after the first set. It does not specify an additional procedure if the inmate remains alive after the second set, according to AP.

Importantly, the reason the execution failed has not been established. Tennessee officials said the approved protocol was followed and that the lethal-injection chemical has consistently been effective. Pike's lawyers have raised their own concerns about the execution, but those allegations should not be treated as an established explanation for what happened.

The failed execution has already triggered a review by Tennessee officials.

Gov. Bill Lee said he ordered a “comprehensive, third-party review” to determine what happened during the execution attempt. He also halted the state's remaining scheduled executions for 2026.

The incident is the second failed Tennessee execution attempt this year. In May, officials stopped the execution of death row inmate Tony Carruthers after they were unable to establish an IV to administer the lethal-injection drugs, according to AP.
