The Kansas City Chiefs are in dire straits after a Week 8 loss to the Denver Broncos, and star defensive lineman Chris Jones seems to be a major part of the team's recent struggles.

Jones failed to register a tackle — neither assisted nor solo — or a sack in Kansas City's latest defeat, and has been one of the Chiefs' most inconsistent performers through seven games of the 2026 NFL regular season.

Though there has been no indication that Kansas City actually wants to trade Jones, the Chiefs are rumored to be in the market for a wide receiver at the trade deadline, and general manager Brett Veach will need to free up cap space to make a blockbuster deal.

As Jones is Kansas City's highest-paid player in terms of salary cap spending, Veach may be wise to consider shopping the veteran sack-master to teams in need of interior defensive linemen.

According to the experts at OverTheCap.com, Jones' base salary for the 2026 season is $19,000,000. The former Mississippi State Bulldog also earned a prorated signing bonus of $9,750,000, a roster bonus of $16,000,000, and a workout bonus of $100,000.

In total, Jones' guaranteed salary is $35,000,000, and his total cap number is $44,850,000 this year.

If Kansas City were to move Jones at the 2026 NFL trade deadline, the Chiefs would save $15,600,000 against their salary cap, but also carry a dead money burden of $29,250,000.

While a Chris Jones trade would help Kansas City clear a significant amount of cap space in the short term, his massive dead money figure could hamper the Chiefs' flexibility for years to come.

It is hard to know what kind of value Jones might have on the trade market. Given his exorbitant salary and minimal production, it seems hard to imagine that Kansas City could get more than a Day 3 draft pick in exchange for the veteran pass-rusher.
