Case against 120 social media profiles for sharing Bihar minors' harassment video

Bihar Police have registered an FIR against around 120 social media profile holders for circulating a video that revealed the identity of a girl, who was chased, harassed, groped and assaulted while returning from a popular hill station in Jamui along with a male friend, who is also a minor.

Jamui Superintendent of Police (SP) Bishwajeet Dayal said late Monday night that making a video involving the minor victim viral while revealing her identity was a serious offence. He appealed to the public not to share or circulate the video and said the main accused in the case would be brought to justice soon.

According to the SP, the police took the matter seriously after receiving information about the incident and initiated strict action. A case has now been registered at the Cyber Police Station against around 120 profiles on different social media platforms for circulating the video and revealing the identity of the minor victim.

The SP said such circulation was a serious crime under the relevant provisions of the Pocso Act, Information Technology Act and Juvenile Justice Act.

"I would like to appeal to the public to be considerate of the minor victim and refrain from making such videos viral," Dayal said.

He added that the police were handling the matter impartially and taking strict action. The main accused, he said, would soon be brought to justice.WHAT HAPPENED IN JAMUI

A minor boy and a girl, both Class 10 students at a local school in Jamui, were molested and harassed by a group of men while returning from a nearby hill station on Saturday evening. The group stopped their scooter, abused them, forced them to get off and chased them when they tried to escape.

Three people have been arrested and a Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Deepti Monali, was formed to identify and arrest the rest of the perpetrators and probe the incident.

SP Dayal had said that the boy and the girl had not approached the police with a complaint until Sunday, two days after the incident. After the video of the incident went viral, the police subsequently traced the victims with the help of the registration number of a vehicle visible in the viral video.

Police said they have identified around seven perpetrators with the help of the video. While three people had been arrested, raids were being conducted to apprehend the others.

The FIR relating to the harassment was registered under the Pocso Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the SP said. Police also initiated steps for the takedown of the video.

Dayal said the boy and girl were friends and attended the same coaching institute.

The incident has also drawn the attention of the Bihar State Women's Commission, which said a detailed report had been sought from the district administration regarding the incident.

The viral video and the harassment incident triggered criticism from opposition leaders.

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi described the incident as "deeply disturbing" in a post on X. He alleged that such attitudes were being normalised and demanded the prosecution of those identified in the video under the Pocso Act.

The Aam Aadmi Party also shared the video clip on its X handle and criticised the BJP-led government in Bihar over the incident.

RJD working president and Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav also criticised the state government over the incident. He blamed Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and alleged that the episode reflected "anarchy" in Bihar.

The Trinamool Congress also condemned the incident, questioning the right of anyone to touch or humiliate a woman without her consent. The party called for those responsible to face due process and the strongest punishment permitted by law.

The ruling BJP-JDU alliance, however, defended the police response.

Union Panchayati Raj and Fisheries Minister and JD(U) national president Rajiv Ranjan Singh said in Kolkata that law and order in Bihar was secure. He said individual incidents could occur, but the police took appropriate action when they did.

Singh also said law and order in a state could not be judged on the basis of a single incident.

BJP spokesperson Neeraj Kumar Sharma said the Bihar Police deserved to be commended for acting proactively and starting the investigation without waiting for the victims to lodge a complaint.

Meanwhile, police have specifically appealed to people not to circulate the video involving the minor victim.
