British-American novelist, commentator Bonnie Greer dies at 77

Bonnie Greer, the British-American novelist, playwright and cultural commentator, has died at the age of 77 following a brief illness, her husband David Hutchins has confirmed.

Greer, born in Chicago on Nov 16, 1948, moved to the UK in 1986 and went on to become one of Britain's most distinctive public voices, appearing regularly as a panellist on Newsnight Review and Question Time, reports The Guardian.

She served on the boards of the Royal Opera House, the British Museum and the London Film School, and was chancellor of Kingston University, London.

In 2022, she was made a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Her published works included “A Parallel Life and Langston Hughes: The Value of Contradiction”.

Hutchins said Greer's "intelligence, courage and distinctive voice made an enduring contribution to British cultural and public life," adding that those closest to her would remember her "warmth, humour, generosity and extraordinary ability to bring people together."
