BMA seizes cannabis, tobacco and suspected heroin in week of border operations - IOL

South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA), working alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS), intercepted millions of rands worth of illegal drugs and smuggled tobacco products during a week of coordinated enforcement operations across key border corridors and transit hubs.

The operations culminated in the seizure of nearly a tonne of cannabis, illicit foreign tobacco products, and more than R2 million in heroin, highlighting heightened surveillance across major border posts and key transport routes.

Baobab Toll Plaza (Limpopo): On September 18, officials intercepted a white Toyota Hilux heading toward the Beitbridge Port of Entry.

The occupants, two Tanzanian nationals, said they did not have the keys to the vehicle’s canopy padlock.

They were then escorted to Beitbridge, where authorities opened the rear section to find 33 bags of suspected dagga weighing 991.5 kilograms, with an estimated street value of R1.5 million. Both suspects were arrested, and a criminal docket was opened at Musina SAPS.

Kosi Bay Corridor (KwaZulu-Natal): Also on September 18, law enforcement stopped a Mozambican-registered truck along the R22, five kilometres from the Kosi Bay Port of Entry.

Hidden beneath a cover shipment of beans, officers uncovered 150 master cases of Afzal hookah tobacco and 50 bags of Vimal Guktha chewing tobacco valued at R1.9 million.

The consignment, believed to have originated in India and transited through Mozambique bound for Durban, was impounded at Manguzi SAPS for further investigation by the KZN Counterfeit Unit.

OR Tambo International Airport (Gauteng): On September 20, in a joint operation at Johannesburg’s main international airport, officers arrested a 52-year-old South African national arriving on a flight from Accra, Ghana.

A search of the suspect's luggage yielded bullet-shaped packages and dense blocks containing suspected heroin valued at over R2 million.

The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on drug trafficking charges.

The airport interception marks the third suspected drug mule apprehended at OR Tambo International Airport over a three-week period,  signalling an intensified focus on international flight arrivals.

BMA Commissioner Dr. Michael Masiapato commended the inter-agency collaboration, emphasising that continuous intelligence sharing and visible cross-border operations remain central to curbing syndicate activity along South Africa's borders.

Masiapato said: “These operations highlight the importance of sustained visibility, intelligence sharing, and joint action at our borders.

The BMA will keep collaborating with SAPS and other partners to disrupt illicit movements and keep illegal goods out of the country.”
