Blue lights saga: Julius Mkhwanazi, ‘Cat’ Matlala back in court - EWN
Alleged underworld boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and former Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court over the blue-lights saga on Friday morning.
They are charged alongside Ekurhuleni fleet manager Chris Steyn.
The three face charges including corruption, fraud and defeating the ends of justice.
The State alleges that a memorandum of understanding was used to have Matlala's private vehicles registered as City of Ekurhuleni assets and fitted with blue emergency lights.
Matlala's companies, Cat VIP Protection, Medicare 24 Tshwane District and Black AK Trading, are alleged to have paid Mkhwanazi a total of R70,000 in 2022 for facilitating the unlawful act.
The State further alleges that four vehicles, including two BMW 3 Series cars, a VW Golf and a Mercedes-Benz V-Class, were registered as municipal assets in January 2023.
