The Bihar Assembly served notice on Mokama MLA Anant Singh on Monday (November 2, 2026), asking him to respond within a week to the plea by the Janata Dal (United) seeking the revocation of his Assembly membership.
On October 24, following the results of elections to eight State Legislative Council seats, in which Mr. Singh had opposed party’s official candidate Neeraj Kumar, the JD(U) expelled the Mokama MLA and his wife, Neelam Devi, for “anti-party activities” for six years. Mr. Kumar went on to win the seat.
Ms. Devi was also removed from the membership of the government’s 20-point programme committee, which had given her the status of a Deputy Minister. She was also asked to vacate the official bungalow in Patna. Two days after the election results, the ruling National Democratic Alliance partner had requested the Speaker to rescind the Mokama lawmaker’s Assembly membership.
On the directive of the State assembly Speaker Prem Kumar, the secretary of the House served notice Mr. Singh asking him to respond the charges made against him within a week’s time by November 9. A series of charges including several newspaper reports and a video CD was also submitted by the JD(U) leaders to the Assembly Speaker’s office on October 26 to rescind his membership from the House, party sources had earlier told The Hindu.
State JD(U) President Umesh Kushwaha and party MLC Sanjay Kumar Singh alias Gandhi, who is considered close to party chief Nitish Kumar, had gone to the office of State assembly Speaker on October 26 with charges against the Mokarna MLA and requested for a “quick action” against him. “The Speaker was not in the office at that time “but, we’re assured for a quick action”, Mr. Kushwaha later told media persons.
On October 30, the Supreme Court directed the expelled MLA to surrender by December 1 in connection with murder of Dular Chand Yadav, for which he was arrested last year.
Mr. Singh said he would comply with the apex court’s order.
