Bengaluru parent flags schools' 'unwritten rule' favouring kids of homemaker moms

A Bengaluru parent has flagged an alleged “unwritten rule” at some schools that favours children of homemakers, claiming applications may be rejected if the applicant’s mother is working.

In a Reddit post titled “Schools in Bangalore,” the parent said they have a 2.5-year-old daughter and recently started exploring schooling options for her. They claimed some schools in the Banashankari area had an “unwritten filtration criteria” requiring mothers to be housewives or risk having their applications rejected.

They had spoken to parents whose children attend one such school and were told that the practice was an “open secret.” Other parents had also advised them to lie on the form if they wanted their daughter to get admission, something they were not comfortable with.

The parent also claimed that the schools ask about the mother’s job status every year to “keep tabs on students."

“What values will these institutions give to the students if the first thought is that women should not be working,” the parent said, adding: “For a tech capital and one of the modern cities, I find this quite shocking and most people just accept it as normal.” The claims triggered calls for parents to challenge the alleged practice rather than comply with it. “The only reason these schools get away with it is because parents either comply or just move on quietly,” a comment read, while another urged people to “Name, shame, report, make a noise.”

The discussion also turned to the schools’ own teaching staff, with a user suggesting that parents ask representatives how many teachers at the school are mothers and how they manage their responsibilities at home.
