Basarnas Divers Recover Another Victim from KM Virgo Transport 8 Inside Sunken Ship

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Basarnas Special Group (BSG) diving team has recovered another victim from KM Virgo Transport 8, which sank in the Java Sea off South Kalimantan on Sunday (9/20/2026).

“The discovery of one victim today is the result of the hard work of the entire Joint SAR Team,” said Basarnas Head M. Syafii in a statement quoted from Basarnas Official’s YouTube channel on Sunday (9/20/2026).

The victim was found at 14:14 Central Indonesia Time (WITA) while BSG Basarnas divers were searching inside the sunken ship’s hull.

After being located, the victim was immediately evacuated by the Joint SAR Team to the KN SAR Kamajaya for further treatment.

Next, the victim will be airlifted by the Basarnas HR 3601 Helicopter.

The evacuation process is carried out using a hoisting rescue net technique, safely and carefully lifting the victim from the ship to the helicopter.

“We will continue to conduct maximum search efforts while prioritizing the safety of all personnel on the ground. Every victim found is a trust that we must evacuate and hand over to their families,” M. Syafii added.

Basarnas together with all elements of the Joint SAR Team are continuing the search and rescue operation for the victims of KM Virgo Transport 8.

The search is being optimized using diving teams, maritime facilities, and aerial support around the shipwreck location.
