Balochistan imposes province-wide curbs

The Balochistan government has imposed strict restrictions across the province with immediate effect to maintain law and order. According to an order issued by the Home Department under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the display of weapons, gatherings of five or more people, and covering of faces in public places have been completely banned for 30 days. An official notification states that the government has received information about possible activities and gatherings that could adversely affect public peace, law and order, and the safety of citizens. In view of this, the following restrictions have been enforced with immediate effect: The display, carrying, possession or use of any kind of weapons in public places is strictly prohibited, except in cases specifically permitted by law. Any gathering, meeting, procession, rally, demonstration or similar activity involving five or more persons at any public place is completely banned. Covering or concealing the face in public places, particularly with a muffler, mask or any other means that hinders identification, is also prohibited. These restrictions are effective immediately and will remain in force throughout the province for 30 days. All relevant law-enforcement agencies and district administrations have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the order. Anyone found violating it will face legal action. The order has been signed by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Muhammad Hamza Shafqat. Copies have been sent to the Registrar of the Balochistan High Court, the Principal Secretaries to the Chief Minister and the Governor, the Inspector General of Police, all Divisional Commissioners, Deputy Inspectors General and Superintendents of Police. Government sources said the measures have been taken to improve the law-and-order situation in the province and to prevent possible disruptive activities. The public has been urged to respect the restrictions and play their role in maintaining peace by abiding by the law.
