The African Union Commission has mourned the death of renowned Senegalese writer and intellectual, Cheikh Hamidou Kane, describing him as a “giant of African letters” whose work profoundly influenced generations across Africa and beyond. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Youssouf, expressed “profound sadness” over Kane’s death in a statement paying tribute to the late author. Youssouf, in a Monday release, described Kane as “the great Senegalese writer and intellectual whose work has marked several generations in Africa and far beyond.” Kane is best known for his acclaimed novel, L’Aventure ambiguë, which the AU Commission chairperson said gave African literature “one of its most profound texts on the encounter of cultures, transmission, education, and the difficult dialogue between heritage and modernity.” Kane’s widely read book2 “Through the fate of Samba Diallo, he posed questions that remain, more than sixty years later, at the heart of Africa’s questioning of itself and its relationship to the world,” Youssouf said. He noted that Kane served as Governor of Thiès on the eve of Senegal’s independence and later became High Commissioner for Planning, Minister of Industrial Development and Handicrafts, and Minister of Planning and Cooperation of Senegal. Paying tribute to Kane’s wider legacy, Youssouf said, “The Chairperson of the Commission salutes the memory of a giant of African letters, a man of thought, action, and transmission who, through the depth and elegance of his work as well as his commitment to public service, profoundly marked African intellectual and public life.” He extended condolences “on behalf of the African Union Commission and in his own name” to Kane’s family, the Senegalese Government and people, and “the great African family of letters and culture.” “May his soul rest in peace,” the statement concluded. Kane, a Senegalese author regarded as a major figure in Francophone African literature, died over the weekend aged 98, Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye said. “His works now belong to the heritage of our nation and to all Africa,” Faye said on his Facebook page.
