Asim Munir vows to defeat terrorism amid rising militancy in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa

Pakistan Army Chief and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir said on Tuesday that the armed forces were determined to defeat terrorism as Pakistan faces a rising threat of militancy. During a visit to Corps Headquarters in Peshawar, he reviewed the security situation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and received updates on ongoing efforts against militant violence.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Munir was briefed on the prevailing security situation in the province, ongoing counter-terrorism operations, border management measures and the operational preparedness of formations deployed there. The army said, "He emphasised that the Armed Forces, with the unwavering support of the nation, remain resolute in their determination to defeat terrorism and ensure lasting peace and stability across the country."

Munir also commended the high morale, readiness and professionalism of officers and troops, and acknowledged their commitment to protecting the country and its people. He also paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the fight against terrorism.

His visit comes at a time when Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is facing a growing terror threat. Recently, militants attacked the old Police Lines in Kohat during Friday prayers, killing at least 21 people and injuring more than 100. Police later said eight attackers were killed in the clearance operation that followed.

Pakistan has seen a resurgence in terrorism since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021. Islamabad has repeatedly urged the Taliban administration in Kabul to dismantle terrorist sanctuaries on Afghan soil, especially those linked to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, which it says are used to launch attacks inside Pakistan. Munir's visit to Peshawar came against this backdrop, with the army stressing its resolve to continue operations and maintain security.
