Asian Games: PNVF admits efforts to support Alas Pilipinas Men 'not enough', vows to address athletes' financial woes - GMA Network
The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) admitted to its shortcomings in financially supporting its athletes after Alas Men veteran Bryan Bagunas raised concerns over the lack of allowances in their Asian Games campaign.
Bagunas claimed that members of the team had not been receiving their allowances, forcing some players to borrow money from one another just to make ends meet. He also shared that some players had been unable to attend training sessions due to a lack of budget for transportation.
In the ongoing Asian Games, Bagunas also shared that the players are being forced to shoulder their own expenses for meals.
PNVF issued an apology over the matter, acknowledging the difficulties experienced by the national team and admitting that its efforts to support the athletes have not been enough.
"In response to the recent interview of Alas Team Captain Bryan Bagunas, the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) extends its sincerest apologies to all our National Athletes for the difficulties they have experienced. Our athletes have dedicated themselves to representing our country, and they deserve nothing less than the full support of the Federation," PNVF said in a statement.
"We acknowledge the concerns raised by Mr. Bagunas in his recent interview. We recognize the sacrifices our athletes have made, including having to shoulder their own expenses and, in some instances, borrow money. This is a situation that no National Athlete should ever have to endure."
According to the PNVF, the federation is still burdened with financial liabilities and outstanding obligations, with its new leadership yet to complete a comprehensive review of its financial records since Frank Lao assumed the presidency in August.
PNVF added that Lao has personally shouldered some expenses in bid to address the immediate concerns.
"We remain committed to establishing a clear and accurate picture of the Federation's financial position and ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of its resources," PNVF added.
"However, we cannot allow the challenges of the past to prevent us from addressing the urgent needs of our athletes today."
The PNVF vowed to rebuild the federation and restore the trust of its athletes through greater financial accountability, concrete action, and stronger support for the national teams.
"Our National Athletes deserve a Federation that works just as hard for them as they battle for our country. Our athletes deserve better. Philippine volleyball deserves better. And we will work tirelessly to deliver better."
