Around 11 million US workers, about 7% of the country’s workforce, may need to change jobs within the next decade because of AI displacement and the vast majority will need substantial retraining, a new McKinsey report predicted. Voters globally have soured on AI because of concerns over its impact on employment, the electricity demands of data centers — and repeated warnings it poses a threat to humanity.

Their fears have made AI a political priority: The Washington Post found policies on AI or data centers in 40% of US midterm campaigns, while AI sovereignty is one of the few consensus issues among French presidential candidates, Le Monde found. AI safety talks in the US Senate, however, have stalled, Semafor reported.
