Amritsar Police gun down accused in ASI Harjit Singh murder case

Days after ASI Harjit Singh was shot dead while on PCR duty in Punjab’s Amritsar, police traced one of the accused and killed him in retaliatory firing, officials said.

The accused, identified as Deepak Singh, a resident of Mulechak, Amritsar, was traced during the investigation into the murder case registered on September 18. Police said CCTV footage, technical inputs, tower-dump analysis and local intelligence helped identify and track him.

According to police, Singh opened fire at police teams during an operation at naka points. The police retaliated in self-defence, injuring him in the exchange of fire. He was taken to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Another suspect involved in the crime managed to escape under the cover of darkness, police said. A search operation is underway to trace him. CP Amritsar on X

Police said they recovered a .30-bore pistol, two magazines, eight live cartridges, a mobile phone and an Activa scooter allegedly used in the crime.

ASI Harjit Singh, around 50, was on PCR duty when two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants followed him and opened fire near Gate No. 2 of the Bhagtanwala grain market in the early hours of September 18.

Singh sustained a fatal gunshot injury and later died. Preliminary investigation suggested that the attackers fired at him from close range before fleeing the spot. Police have been examining CCTV footage and telecom data to reconstruct the movements of the assailants.Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 1 crore for the family of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjeet Singh.
