An Ohio man and former music pastor who once auditioned on "American Idol" has been sentenced to life in prison without parole after a jury convicted him of murdering his wife while conducting an extramarital affair.

Caleb Flynn, 40, shot Ashley Flynn, a 37-year-old schoolteacher and volleyball coach, inside their home in February before attempting to stage a home invasion to cover up the crime, according to prosecutors.

During a 2013 episode of "American Idol," Flynn spoke to television viewers about how his wife encouraged him to pursue his music career.

He failed to advance to the main competition stage in Hollywood.

Tears fell down Flynn’s face as he apologized to his family in court on Monday, addressing his two daughters first.

"I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day. I failed in those vows," he said.

Flynn admitted to telling numerous lies, but he remained steadfast in asserting his innocence regarding the fatal shooting.

"As I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife," he said.

Miami County Common Pleas Judge Jeannine Pratt said she was profoundly disturbed that Flynn relied on his religious faith to mask his "deceit" and "lust."

The judge cited a victim statement written by one of the daughters, which was read in court by a relative: "What did Ashley ever do to make you hate her so much?"

In closing arguments, prosecutors told the jury that Flynn wanted to end his marriage when he shot his wife at their residence in Tipp City, a suburb north of Dayton. The couple’s two daughters were inside the home with their father when police arrived.

State attorneys presented evidence that Flynn sent a text message to his mistress the night before the murder, writing: "I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow," prosecutors said.

Testifying during the trial, Alleigha Botner told jurors she met Flynn in 2022 while working as a 20-year-old intern at his church and carried on an affair with him for over a year. She stated that Flynn told her he hated his wife and had considered killing her.

The jury was also played AI-generated love songs that prosecutors said Flynn created for Botner. Neither Flynn nor any defense witnesses testified during the proceedings.

The firearm used to kill Ashley Flynn was never recovered, and defense attorneys argued that investigators lacked proof showing Flynn fired a weapon that day.

However, prosecutors produced evidence of his fingerprints and DNA at the scene, along with electronic device records showing movement throughout the residence when Flynn claimed to be asleep.

The jury convicted him of murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.
