Al Jama-ah’s Salie puts safety and service delivery at centre of election campaign - IOL

Al Jama-ah has named Advocate Shameemah Dollie Salie as its candidate for Cape Town mayor, with the sitting City councillor putting safety, ageing infrastructure and service delivery at the centre of her campaign ahead of the November 4 local government elections.

Salie was announced as the party’s mayoral candidate in Bonteheuwel on Friday, September 25, 2026, adding her name to the field of candidates ahead of the November 4 local government elections.

She identified safety, infrastructure and service delivery as her three priorities, pointing to safety, gender-based violence, cable theft, sewerage problems and potholes among the issues she believes the City needs to address.

Salie also questioned whether Cape Town’s existing infrastructure was keeping pace with population growth and housing demand.

She said the City was building on infrastructure that was not designed to accommodate the number of people now living in Cape Town and said she had previously questioned Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis about plans to increase infrastructure capacity.

She is also contesting Ward 60, which includes Lansdowne, Kenwyn, Rondebosch East, Garlandale and Sybrand Park.

At the Bonteheuwel announcement, Salie said her campaign would also focus on residents she believes have been marginalised in the city.

Salie has a legal background and previously worked as a State Advocate and with the Office of the Family Advocate before entering politics.
