Access to Joy | Preventing Falls - ABC News & Headlines – Australian Broadcasting Corporation
We meet Fran Henke, a retired journalist and author, painter and dog owner who gets about on her scooter, bringing any plants or pots that people leave out on the nature strip, home with her.
Some of her favourite plants have come via scrounging or gifted from neighbours, including geraniums, wallflowers, and camellias. “My garden has got such a personal link to friends’ says Fran.
Fran is a polio survivor, and her garden practice considers her condition, including clearing paths of fallen debris and rough edges and wearing sensible footwear to avoid falls. Fran is a resourceful gardener; she has written twelve garden books and includes her art creations into her garden with a view that ‘art makes the garden live.’ At night she enjoys knitting garden characters, including bearded Costa dolls. Fran gives everything a go; she finds peace in gardens and gardening and enjoys creating gardens wherever she lives.
