Aaryavir Sehwag named Delhi U19 captain for Vinoo Mankad Trophy
Aaryavir Sehwag has been handed his first major leadership assignment, with the 18-year-old named captain of Delhi’s Under-19 team for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy. The Delhi & District Cricket Association announced the 16-member squad on Saturday, with the tournament set to be held in Visakhapatnam from October 8.
The appointment comes soon after Aaryavir’s first taste of India Under-19 cricket. The son of former India opener Virender Sehwag was part of the Indian squad for the three-match Youth ODI series against Australia in Rajkot last month. He made an encouraging start on debut, scoring 28 off 26 balls in a rain-shortened game as India edged Australia by seven runs.
He followed it up with his best score of the series in the second ODI. Aaryavir made a patient 47, putting together important partnerships at the top of the order before an unfortunate run-out ended his innings three runs short of a half-century. In the third match, he made another useful start but was dismissed for 34. He finished the series with 109 runs from three innings. The India Under-19 series was an important step for Aaryavir, who had only recently made a brief appearance in senior domestic cricket. He played two matches for West Delhi Lions in the 2026 Delhi Premier League, scoring 24 runs. He also made headlines earlier in his age-group career when he smashed 297 for Delhi against Meghalaya in the Cooch Behar Trophy in 2024.
Aaryavir has spoken about the need to turn promising starts into big scores. After the Australia series, he acknowledged that he had failed to convert his opportunities into substantial innings and said he had learnt the importance of building long innings by breaking them into different phases.
The Delhi captaincy now gives him another opportunity to take his game forward. It also places greater responsibility on a young batter who has already attracted considerable attention because of his surname.
Aaryavir will lead a 16-member Delhi squad that includes Arnav Bugga as vice-captain. The team will begin its Vinoo Mankad Trophy campaign in Visakhapatnam from October 8, with the new captain looking to build on his recent India Under-19 experience and make an impact in domestic cricket.DELHI U19 SQUAD FOR VINOO MANKAD TROPHY
