The Super Eagles will face Guinea-Bissau in their second Group L fixture of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON qualifiers on Tuesday, with the encounter carrying significant importance for Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the tournament.

Nigeria opened their campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in Uyo, while Guinea-Bissau defeated Tanzania 2-0 to move top of the group on goal difference.

With both teams on three points, the meeting provides Nigeria with an opportunity to move ahead of one of their main rivals.

Here are four reasons why victory could be particularly important for the Super Eagles.

1. Only one qualification spot is available

Group L presents a different qualification scenario because Tanzania are among the hosts of the 2027 AFCON alongside Kenya and Uganda and therefore have an automatic place at the tournament.

That leaves Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar competing for the group’s available qualification spot.

As a result, every point gained against a direct rival could prove important when the final standings are decided.

2. Guinea-Bissau currently lead the group

Guinea-Bissau made a strong start by defeating Tanzania 2-0 in their opening fixture.

Nigeria, meanwhile, had to come from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1.

Both sides therefore have three points, but Guinea-Bissau sit above the Super Eagles on goal difference.

A victory for Nigeria would allow Eric Chelle’s side to move ahead of the Djurtus after just two matches.

A win would take the Super Eagles to six points from their opening two games.

That would give Nigeria an early advantage in the group and put pressure on the other teams chasing the available qualification position.

After collecting maximum points against Madagascar, another victory would also give the Super Eagles the opportunity to establish momentum at the start of the campaign.

4. Nigeria can deny a direct rival points

Perhaps the biggest significance of the fixture is that Guinea-Bissau are competing for the same qualification spot as Nigeria.

A victory would therefore have a double effect for the Super Eagles: Nigeria would collect three points while Guinea-Bissau would leave the encounter without any.

By contrast, a defeat would move the Djurtus three points clear of Nigeria, while a draw would keep both sides level on points.
