20 suspects nabbed for election-related offences in Limpopo - TimesLIVE
Limpopo police have arrested 20 suspects for election-related offences since the start of the 2026 local government elections.
According to police, about 33 cases of election-related incidents have been registered in Limpopo.
The offences include contravention of the Electoral Act, fraud, common assault, malicious damage to property and pointing a firearm.
SAPS spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said some of the arrested suspects have already appeared in local magistrate’s courts.
Among the incidents reported were cases where individuals allegedly contravened the Electoral Act by taking photographs of marked ballot papers using their cellphones and subsequently circulating or publishing the images on various social media platforms.
“Such conduct is prohibited in terms of electoral legislation and undermines the secrecy and integrity of the voting process,” Ledwaba said.
Police also responded to other incidents involving alleged unlawful conduct during the election, resulting in the opening of criminal cases and the subsequent arrest of suspects.
Limpopo police commissioner Lt-Gen Jan Scheepers has welcomed the arrests and commended SAPS members, other law enforcement agencies and all stakeholders who worked to ensure a safe and peaceful election.
Scheepers has also applauded the collective efforts, dedication and co-operation demonstrated by all role players, highlighting the importance of partnerships and co-ordinated efforts in safeguarding communities, voters and election officials.
He expressed appreciation to members who remained committed to their duties throughout the election, as well as stakeholders who provided unwavering support, co-operation and prayers towards ensuring that the electoral process proceeded in a safe and secure environment.
Scheepers reiterated that SAPS will not hesitate to take action against anyone who violates the law, irrespective of their position or affiliation, and that all reported cases will be attended to in accordance with the law.
