15 days is a long time in cricket: BCCI secretary on Ajit Agarkar's future
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia on Friday refused to give a clear answer on Ajit Agarkar's future as chairman of the senior selection committee, saying there were still 15 days left before his current term ends.
Agarkar chaired his final selection meeting of the current term in New Delhi on Wednesday, when the squads for India's upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies were picked. His contract is due to expire on October 4.
Speaking to reporters after the BCCI's 95th Annual General Meeting in Mumbai, Saikia said the Board would take a decision at an appropriate time.
"We still have fifteen days to go. Fifteen days is a long time in the world of cricket. We will take a decision in appropriate time and we will let you know about it. Today, there was no discussion on any individual," Saikia said.
The BCCI AGM did not decide whether Agarkar will be given an extension or replaced. Instead, the Board's office-bearers were authorised to take a call on the future of the senior selection committee.
The uncertainty comes with India entering an important phase of its white-ball calendar. The next major assignment is the home series against New Zealand, while preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup will also gather pace in the coming months.
Agarkar's absence from the BCCI's review meeting earlier this month had added to speculation around his position. Saikia had then said Agarkar was out of station when the meeting was called at short notice and could not join online because of connectivity issues. He also said there had been no discussion about changes to the selection committee at that meeting.
The BCCI has also begun the process of appointing a new junior selection committee. Saikia said a large number of applications had been received and that the process would be completed in the next 10-15 days.JUNIOR PANEL
The BCCI secretary said the new junior selection committee would be formed soon after the Cricket Advisory Committee completes the interview process.
"We have received a large number of applicants for junior selection committee, which we will give to our cricket committee who will be competent to select the selectors. We will be trying to complete the process in next 10-15 days," he said.
The BCCI had invited applications for all five positions on the Junior Cricket Committee in August. The panel will be responsible for selecting India's age-group teams up to Under-22 level.GHOSH'S SHORT-TERM ROLE
Saikia also clarified that Subhadeep Ghosh's appointment as India's men's fielding coach is currently for a short period. "Indian men's team fielding coach (Subhadeep Ghosh) has been appointed for a short time but we will be assessing his performance (for a longer stint)," Saikia said.
