A 46-year-old NRI woman in Ahmedabad has accused her husband of cheating, assault and harassment after finding romantic chats with around 15 women on his phone just 15 days after their marriage.

The woman, who has lived in the US for years and is an American citizen, had married the man through a matrimonial website after being divorced twice. She said she became suspicious when she noticed that her husband was constantly busy on his mobile phone.

When she checked his phone, she found chats, names and numbers of around 15 women and girls from Goa, the US and Ahmedabad. When she questioned him about the conversations, he became angry, abused her and assaulted her.

The woman also said that her husband was addicted to alcohol and gambling. After their marriage, the couple travelled to Goa and Bali. During the trip, the husband lost a lump sum of money while gambling at a hotel in Goa and treated her badly.

She further said that one of his girlfriends claimed to be his wife during the Goa trip. When she objected, the husband pulled her by the hand, causing serious injuries to her wrist.

The woman also accused her husband of demanding money that her father had received from selling a shop as dowry. She alleged that he took the gold and silver jewellery she had brought from her parents' home, saying he would keep it in a bank locker, but later refused to return it.

The woman eventually reported the matter to the Ahmedabad police. Based on her allegations, police registered a case and began an investigation.

Police said their preliminary investigation found that the accused man had been married previously and has a son and a daughter. The investigation also found allegations that the man, along with his son and daughter, threatened the woman, financially exploited her and subjected her to physical and mental torture.

Further investigation is underway.- Ends
